    Project Details

    • Created using our modular, stackable PlantBox living wall system
    • Installed to reduce air pollution, boost biodiversity and help to reduce stress levels.

South Western Railway approached Biotecture to design and install a series of living walls at a number of their stations as part of a wider plan to improve the public realm, combat air pollution and increase biodiversity.

The first living walls have been installed at Portsmouth Harbour, Weymouth and Hampton Court Stations with several more to be installed later this year. Biotecture’s design and project management team took each project from initial enquiry through to installation on site.

The living walls have been created using PlantBox, a stackable, modular living wall system which is perfect for smaller projects.

PlantBox is manufactured in the UK from 100% recycled materials. As it is modular it can also be dismantled and re-assembled in another location in the future.

PlantBox is easy to assemble on site and Biotecture’s installation team worked with the station managers to ensure the work was completed safely. We planted up the troughs in our West Sussex Nursery in advance and transported them to site for installation.

Each living wall includes a simple irrigation system which can be connected to a tap for easy watering. Each trough includes an integrated reservoir and a cascading system to ensure water reaches the bottom of the wall.

At SWR, our mission is more than simply getting people from A to B. We’re passionate about helping to the support the communities we serve, including by making them greener and more sustainable. By improving air quality and providing a safe home for all sorts of wildlife, this brilliant new Living Wall at Portsmouth Harbour Station does just this.
