Butterfly Pavilion, UAE Living Wall
Project Details
- Oval shaped living wall openings
The butterfly Pavilion on Noor Island has transformed a previously barren space into an oasis of peace and tranquillity amid the high rises of the desert city of Sharjar, UAE. The brief for the project was to create an imposing, nature-inspired structure covered in plants. The leisure complex has won multipul awards including best leisure architecture in Africa and Arabia 2016 as part of the international Property Awards.
Biotecture worked alongside our partners in the U.A.E. Proscape Group to install these oval shaped living walls inside the butterfly pavilion in the Noor Island development. The rainforest biotope covers 230m² and boasts a spectacular landscape design. Islands of tropical plants are embedded in a white 3D-modeled surface with an ornamental print that extends seamlessly across the entire floor and the walls. The pavilion is an artificial eco-system, and its rainforest biotope – populated with countless butterflies – is housed inside a sealed climate skin.
The living walls were designed in organic oval shapes. The plants appear recessed into the wall. This affect is achieved by installing planted living wall panels to the supporting structure and then fitting an overlay finish with oval shaped openings that sits proud of the front surface of the living wall panels.
A lush green planting plan of sub tropical and tropical plants was selected to suit the climate inside the butterfly pavilion and compliment the other aspects of landscaping.
