    Project Details

    • Sheltered basement courtyard garden
    • Directly opposite the kitchen and dining room windows of the property.
    • 240 plants

Biotecture were commissioned by Sparrow garden design to design and install the Living wall in this basement level courtyard garden of a residential property in Little Venice, London.

The plants in this living wall were selected taking into consideration the sheltered location that receives no direct sunlight because of the below ground level location and shading from the main building. The plants form soft elegant waves with a variety of green tones and leaf shapes to give an interesting texture to the planting palette. The client was keen to maintain a natural planting look so trailing species were included to add an element of flow to the planting.

A living Wall is a really great way to introduce a lot of plants into a small space like this one without compromising available floor space. By having all the planting vertically this is still a usable tranquil garden space allowing the home owner to enjoy what small outdoor space they have. It also gives a much better outlook from the house than the previous bare concrete wall.

The automated irrigation system installed by Biotecture allows the watering of the plants to be done automatically meaning that maintenance for the client is kept to a minimum. In addition Biotecture were also contracted to perform the ongoing maintenance on this living wall. Our dedicated maintenance team visit the wall regularly to cut back the plants and replace them as require to ensure that the garden is always looking it’s best.
