Biotecture recently completed this internal living wall at Legal and General's new flagship HQ in The Interchange, Cardiff. The green wall was installed using Biotecture’s naturally resilient hydroponic system and the planting design includes the icon Legal and General umbrella.
Project Details
The new 120,000 sq. ft, eight-storey Cardiff Interchange development brings together over 1,800 Legal and General employees into a new Wales HQ. The design prioritizes sustainability and employee well-being, and meets Well Platinum standards. The Architect’s also targeted a four-star Nabers UK rating for Net Zero operational performance.

Our Approach
Design and Project Management
Our design and project management team took the project on from the Architect’s drawings, we worked closely with the contractor to ensure the living wall was integrated into the building and the installation went smoothly.
Planting Design
The building is Legal and General’s new flagship HQ and the client wanted to include subtle branding into the living wall. Biotecture incorporated the iconic Legal & General logo into the planting design. Plants were selected for their colour, form and texture, and to suit the interior conditions.
Horticulture
Biotecture’s hydroponic living walls are ‘pre-grown’ into our own patented BioPanel modular panels at our dedicated nursery facility in West Sussex, where we have over 3,000 sqm of purpose-built vertical racks. The planted panels were allowed to mature before being installed on site.
Installation
Our BioPanel system is installed in two phases, The first fix includes the installation of backing board and aluminum mounting rail as well as the installation and commissioning of the irrigation system. The second fix was the installation of planted panels, which slot in between the aluminum mounting rails. This installation was completed using a BMU system located above the living wall, which will also be used for ongoing maintenance.
Maintenance
As part of the project, an integrated irrigation system has been installed, which is remotely monitored by our team from our office in West Sussex. This advanced system ensures that the plants receive the necessary water and nutrients for their well-being and growth. Additionally, regular horticultural maintenance visits will be conducted to ensure that the living walls are meticulously maintained and continue to look their best.
