Tower House Green Wall, Covent Garden, London
Project Details
- Indoor Reception Space Living Wall
- 6.6m high planted wall visible from the ground floor reception space and the first floor balcony
This is the second Covent Garden green wall that Biotecture have worked on with Capital and Counties Properties PLC (Capco). Capco purchased Tower House in 2016. It was an important addition to the portfolio because of the location on Southampton Street which is seen as a gateway to the estate. Tower House is a 53,700 square foot retail, residential and office building with views over the Covent Garden Piazza. As part of a large renovation of the Tower house building, Capco wanted to create an impactful new reception space for the ground floor entrance on Southampton Street. Following on from the success of the large outdoor living wall that Biotecture had installed on Regal House in 2017, Capco worked with Biotecture again to design and specify an internal living wall that would soften the space and help to improve acoustics in the large open space.
Biotecture designed a planting design with naturally curving shapes and intersecting lines in contrast to the straight lines of the modern interior design. A colour palette of lush greens with textural foliage punctured with flowering plants in bright red colours will ensure that the living wall has a changing aesthetic as the seasons change.
The plants chosen are all sub-tropical plants that will thrive in the heated indoor environment but it was important that they would also be comfortable with the cold air that would come in from the street door that will be opening to let people in and out of the building.
