A freestanding living wall was used to create this bench in a shopping centre. Biotecture collaborated with Biowall, a Norwegian living wall company, on this project, located in Fornebu, near Oslo.
The green wall allows for lush, dense greenery to brought inside and contains species that would not normally thrive in the cold outdoor conditions. The foliage spans 15 metres squared and extends around the entire structure without interruption. A wooden slated base forms the bench, which simultaneously houses the irrigation system.
The Plants in the living wall are providing clean air and improving indoor air quality inside the shopping centre by trapping particulate matter and releasing oxygen into the air. People are naturally attracted to nature and plants so a bench which offers the opportunity to rest during a busy shopping visit and also allows the public to be in close proximity to the plants is a great fit. This easily recognisable feature is also a great way finding feature within the centre.
